Quart’s Past Missions and Professional Code
La piel del tamborThis flow follows Quart’s use of a disciplined professional code across earlier crises and the way Seville makes that code insufficient.

A Diplomat in Training

A Diplomat in Training
A chosen profession
Quart studies canon law, diplomacy, and church-state relations before joining the IOE. He acquires a professional identity that rewards composure and technical competence.
A protected routine
The code gives him structure and a place in the world. It also provides a barrier between his actions and the people affected by them.
The Panama Negotiation

The Panama Negotiation
A diplomatic emergency
Quart helps manage negotiations after Manuel Noriega enters the Vatican diplomatic mission. He coordinates with church officials and outside authorities amid a volatile standoff.
Costly success
The operation protects several people and helps secure Noriega’s surrender, but Quart is injured by a soldier who does not accept his diplomatic credentials. Success does not mean complete control.
Sarajevo’s Bargain

Sarajevo’s Bargain
A dangerous evacuation
Quart helps arrange the evacuation of an archbishop from Sarajevo, carrying money through a besieged city. The mission requires negotiation among armed groups and depends on practical compromises.
An encounter with need
He meets Jasmina, who seeks food and cigarettes for her family. Quart refuses to treat her as payment for aid, showing that his code can restrain exploitation as well as enable covert work.
The Seville Dilemma

The Seville Dilemma
A familiar mandate
Quart is told to investigate discreetly, gather information, and avoid taking sides. The assignment seems well suited to the precise rules by which he has lived.
Human claims intrude
The people around the church resist being reduced to evidence. Their stories force Quart to see that the supposedly neutral report may determine whether a community loses its refuge.
A Code Reconsidered

A Code Reconsidered
Career consequence
Quart is removed from the IOE for taking sides, though Spada arranges a diplomatic post instead of a harsher punishment. His professional identity is altered but not erased.
A changed standard
The Seville mission leaves him less certain that following orders is enough. He carries that question into exile, where the rules remain but no longer seem like a complete moral answer.
